Running With The Fash Pack....London Fashion Week A/W 2010

And this is my second utterly gorgeous student, Peony (how beautiful is her name as well.It is my favourite flower!). Peony is a university student studying History of Art. She is friends with Rowan :)
In the photos below Peony is wearing a Peter Pilotto dress and of course that sweet little Hermes Birkin. Talking about Peter Pilotto has everyone seen the photos from the show? Those boys are complete geniuses: I loved the burnt orange colours although they did bear rather a strong resemblance to my mum's 70's kitchen (all orange and olive green) before she had it renovated the year before last!) and the leather accents were perfect. A completely wearable collection although I suspect (judging by past seasons) not affordable for most of us.

Edit: Okily, I know I lot of you were wondering what Peony was wearing in these photos so Peony was kind enough to email me the details:

Second 2 photos: "The cardigan is Zara, the belt is Gap kids (i have had it since i was nine, which means it is 13 years old!!!), the shoes are Russell and Bromley, the dress was Peter Pilotto and a huge spend for me (from his first collection before they were really a big deal), although the trench and fur wasn't included* it was a Burberry (and from the sample sale, it was £75, and both me and Rowan love to go to sample sales and often get our designer items from them) and the fur was vintage (and a gift from my mothers friend, it used to be hers, she is now in her 80s!)".

*I asked Peony if she wouldn't mind taking off her trench and fur because I loved her dress so much. Hence they aren't in the photos.

First 2 photos: "The hat was Joseph (a present from my mother), the scarf is McQueen (from Biechester village- this is an outlet village for any non-UK blog readers), the jacket is Hugo Boss, the Fur gilet is Zara, the trousers are American Apparel, and the shoes are Giuseppe Zanotti (on sale from Joseph).

In reference to the comments about my mini Birkin, it was a birthday present from my parents and it is second hand from a dealer in Hong Kong.....I am obviously incredibly lucky to have any of these things, but you can also see that not everything is designer, and I believe style has much more to do with person appropriation, of many different sources; vintage, thrift, designer, high street, in order to assimilate a great combination. I would never dress head to toe in any label, and I know Rowan wouldn't either (even if we could afford it)".

Brilliantly put, Peony, and I couldn't agree more. I think Caroline Issa (who is wearing customised Gap with designer in the photo a couple of posts above) is a perfect example of this.

  8. So glad you guys like Peony's photos- I feel sure she will see your comments :)) Both her and Rowan are genuinely lovely people and very humble about their looks (gees, if I looked like either of them I would be jumping in front of everyone's camera- invited or not!).

Anon- hopefully Peony will post where she got her belt from or otherwise, if she emails me, I will ask for you.

Looking Fab in Your Forties- Ha ha- I haven't got one either and I suspect I might be 60 before one comes my way ;) Still, better late than never. Talking of Looking Fab in Your Forties (and over), did you see Vanessa Redgrave (who I was named after!) at the BAFTA's? I thought she looked absolutely wonderful, very elegant and refined.....

Jacquie- STEP AWAY FROM THE STUDENT LOAN!!!!!!!!

  11. Hi, I like your blog! Very well taken photos of people with great style. I also find it strange that two students can afford Hermes and Alexander McQueen. Even people with real jobs have to think twice before they make a purchase on those products. Maybe this is the root of credit crisis. Young generations live on credit! Who is working and paying the tax? The ones that can't afford Hermes and McQueen!

  12. Anon- thanks so much for the compliment re the blog and photos :):)
Regarding being able to wear designer items while a student, I really just think it depends on your circumstances. I know that my parents couldn't have afforded to send me overseas to study at Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard (well, I guess if they took out a second mortgage maybe but it would have been a struggle-and there is only one of me!) but I am absolutely positive that there are parents from Australia that do send their children overseas for tertiary education. And I read an article recently about the number of parents from the UK who are sending their children to US universities at great expense. I very much doubt it is an option for the majority but some people are fortunate enough to be able to have that experience.
The thing is when I was at uni I worked 2 jobs to have some spending money (for going out, clothes, etc) and my parents also gave me an allowance (so I didn't need a student loan). This allowed me to shop at Sportsgirl and Portmans, in Aus (kind of like Topshop over here) but no way could I afford anything designer. But not everyone I went to uni with had to work, and a lot were always taking expensive overseas holidays etc which I was never able to- hence my love of travel now!
So I guess what I am trying to say is that everything totally depends on your personal circumstances: and remember that they could be borrowing mum's/sister's things or have gotten really awesome Christmas presents!
Right, now, let me just go and write my Birthday list:
    1. Enormous Mulberry bag- check
    2. Isabel Marant Dana boots- check
    3. Chloe canvas sandles- check
    4. Acne Zone crystal tank- check
    5. ......
(likely to get none of the above but might as well put in my wish list anyway!)

  15. I think the belt in the last two photos definitely puts the whole ensemble together, "cinched it" if you will...! Magenta against gray is a favorite any day.

Keep up fantastic work, Vanessa. I am so glad your blog and photography is getting the attention it deserves. Hugs xo

  19. I'm the anon who asked about the belt...wow! I thought it would be designer! So I think I might pop into Gap Kids tommorow and try my luck. Peony, you have an admirable sense of style and Vanessa, although I'm a recent finder of your blog, from what I've seen you're doing a great job. Thanks :)

  21. Vanessa I am most definitely a fan... reading Peony's (love her name!) descriptions and explanation of her style philosophy and seeing all your photos and the people you choose to photograph... you know how to pick 'em.

I love that you choose quirky, colourful, characters with genuine flair... I love that colour isn't a dirty word!
