The Red Bow

Despite the title, this isn't a post about The Red Bow (despite its serious gorgeousness factor). Nope, this is a post about the gorgeous Bip Ling who I met up with last week. You might have seen Bip in issue 2 of LOVE magazine, Vogue UK or DJ'ing and hosting club nights in hip places about town (like Shoreditch House & Hoxton's Macbeth Public House).

I first stumbled across Bip's blog last year and then lost track of her when my computer died (that is why you should not use "favourites" to keep track of your favourite websites) and then a couple of weeks ago I found her again (and weirdly we discovered that I know some of her friends!). Bip graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2008 and since then has worked in PR, interned in the art department at Vogue but is ultimately aiming for a career as a television presenter - she was co-presenter at London Fashion Week in Feb for T5M.

And Bip's style? Relaxed, comfy and just a little bit quirky :) She likes to steal* her Aussie boyfriend's clothes (the t-shirt she is wearing here is his, by Ksubi, which of course I was super excited about) and sometimes wears pieces her mama, the famous fashion illustrator and designer, Tanya Ling, has designed.
Her floaty, sheer trousers are a vintage pair, on their first outing, that she picked up a few months ago (with little American Apparel shorts underneath) and her shoes are Comme des Garçons for Converse high-tops.

Oh, and the red bow? PPQ!
*okay, so probably it isn't exactly stealing when you borrow stuff from your boyfriend.....although I guess it depends whether he ever gets it back or not!

  1. vanessa, i think this might be one of my favourites of your posts. i love how you've got to see the photos, read your comments, and then keep scrolling down and wait to see the complete outfit is - i was totally surprised by each new photo and her whole look i love the way you've put it together. and that collage of photos are so beautiful! it's so fun to seem so many different snaps of her.

p.s. next time you run into her can you please ask if we can have a makeup lesson meet up? her skin looks absolutely flawless and i LOVE her eye makeup! (i just make a big fat mess on my face when i try to do eyeliner!!) xx

  2. @The style crusader- thanks so much lovely Jen! She is so cute isn't she? I too look ridiculous if I try and do a "heavy eye"- it just ends up on my upper eyelids and under my eye such that I look like I've gone a few rounds in the boxing ring. Plus I get it all over my fingers (while trying to make it smudgey and smokey, of course!). Her mama is from Calcutta so I think that accounts for her beautiful skin (*sigh*).

  4. @Clare- thank you! I would look completely and utterly ridiculous wearing that red bow (that is wear age does come into play!) but Bip just suits it perfectly.

  9. The oversized bow is AMAZING. Bar none.
I so wanted one from Benoit Missolin ages ago. Alternatively that or a pair of bunny ears. Then realized everyone in my tres conservative social circle would stare at me weirdly and possibly ostracize me from their wine and cheese nights of West Wing discussions.

I just like to think I'm cooler than that (nudge nudge)

And as for borrowing from the boyfriend. I totally know what you mean. I chose my ex boyfriend's entire wardrobe just so I could raid it...

    xx

PS. They do still make Love Kylie here alongside Elle Macpherson Intimates and have you checked out Pleasure State?

  10. Hi Vanessa,

I just stumbled across your blog from Lucky Magazine and just thought I'd leave a note to say how beautiful your photographs are. I noticed you referenced Australia a few times, are you from there? I'm a Brit living there at the moment and your photos from Paris FW made me a little homesick for Europe!

Anyway, you have a great blog which I am following from now on!

  14. Hey everyone (@Mia, @Ladybird, @Fashionistable,@Kazuko,@les metamorphoses d'Alice,@the photodiartist, @Lis-x)- so glad you like the shots of Bip! She is such a cool girl (hellloooooo resident DJ at Shoreditch House!) and a pleasure to photograph.

@Lucy Laucht- hey Lucy, yep, I am an Aussie (hee hee- I don't mention it very often do I!;))) I am living in London but am heading Down Under to photograph at RAFW which I am SO excited about!!! What I am not excited about though is being squished into a tiny seat for 23 hours on a plane- argghhhh. So are you in Sydney?????

@KohCo- ha ha! What a cunning plan! "Yep, you really should buy that Herringbone or Farage shirt- it looks SO good on you" (and all the while, Bec, you were thinking hmmmm but it would look so much better on ME!"). Re the red bow- I wonder what would happen if you turned up at your law lectures wearing it! I suspect you would get a few looks from your lecturers/tutors :)
