Weekend Life....Country South Australia

Country South Australia, late April 2013.

A few images from my travels in South Australia on the journey to stay at the beautiful Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island and North Bundaleer, Clare Valley earlier this year.

Some of our favourite places:

Barossa

Maggie Beer's Farm Shop: A Barossa (and Australian) institution. The lovely shop stocks Maggie's products (I doubt there would be many Australian food lovers who haven't tried Maggie's Quince paste with some gorgeous cheese over the years!), seasonal produce and also serves picnic-style goodies to munch on. The dam beside the shop is full of wonderful little round turtles - excellent entertainment for little kids and kids at heart :)

Barossa Farmers Market: Saturday mornings. Go early (Australians love a good food market and rise early to do their produce browsing and shopping!) to avoid the lines for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Be sure to visit Saskia Beer's stall (her mama is Maggie Beer) to sample her excellent charcuterie (great for a picnic if you are on a road trip).

Schulz's Butchers. Excellent metwurst from an old fashioned butcher's shop.

Rockford Wines, Penfolds and Seppeltsfield Winery = 3 of our favourite wineries in the Barossa.

Salter's Kitchen at Saltram winery. We enjoyed a lovely casual lunch on the outside terrace.

Blond Coffee, Angaston. Coffee + sweet treat fix, sorted.

Adelaide Hills

Hahndorf is a beautiful little town in the Adelaide Hills which shouldn't be missed if you are visiting South Australia/Adelaide. We were there in Autumn and the trees lining the main street were a mass of glorious shades of crimson and orange. If you are after a good old-fashioned Aussie cream bun or vanilla slice, try Otto's bakery on Main street.

Mclaren Vale

Primo Estate. My favourite tasting! Make sure you do The Joseph Experience which combines both wine and olive oil tasting. Brilliant value at $15 pp which is redeemable on any Joseph purchase.

If you need any more convincing to visit South Australia, take a peek at this wonderful clip highlighting the beauty of the Barossa and the diverse produce available in the region.

Thank you to the South Australian Tourism Commission for assisting with travel arrangements.

  7. @K - thanks so much! Me too, very proud to be an Aussie. p.s. Have you watched The Man From Snowy River lately? I watched it with my friend's littlies a few weeks ago and had a little cry. Amazing scenery.....

@Richard Bainbridge - thank you Richard! So glad you loved South Australia. I still want to go to the Flinders - it was too far to go on this trip unfortunately for the limited amount of time we had.

@debra@dustjacket - you would love it Debra! And the time of year we went (late April, early May) is perfect as it isn't too hot (although if you like to swim at the beach, earlier in the year might be better). There would be loads more things to do - we just didn't have any more time to fit everything in! We only drove through Adelaide on the way to the airport and it looked beautiful. A few days in Adelaide is on my list for next time. And yes, Maggie is wonderful!

@Megan Rose - yay! So happy you love it! That is what is so unique/amazing about Adelaide - the "country" is only a short drive away so you really can get away from city life so easily and within a short time period.

@i am not a celebrity - hello you!!! Isn't the video AMAZING!!!! So incredible. Would love to have taken the stills on that video shoot :)

@Hannah McCawley - ahhhh thanks so much Hannah. It really is a stunningly beautiful part of Australia.
