Grown-Up Mouseketeer

So last year when we went to the US I got to visit Disneyland, which I have wanted to do since I was little. It was brilliant if slightly surreal. And yes, of course I desperately wanted to buy a pair of the personalised mouse ears because, you know, I could wear them out, um, everywhere! Like to do the grocery shopping, to pick up the paper and milk in the morning from the local shop, to drop off the mail at the postbox..... I could even wear them to all those fabulous parties that surely I would be invited to. Sadly my husband dissuaded me from the purchase on the basis that, really, I wouldn't ever actually wear the mouse ears and they would just sit on a shelf gathering dust (true!).

And I am so glad that I didn't buy them because now I am entirely in love with Rowan's* infinitely more grown-up version of the mouse-ears hat by Marie Mercié! How amazing does she look in it???!!!!

You can click on the collage to make it bigger. (I have now widened my blog but not sure if it still all fits on everyone's computer screens- so let me know if you are having viewing difficulties or it looks a bit shouty-crackers).You might remember Rowan and Peony who I met and photographed at London Fashion Week in February. I was fortunate enough to be able to shoot them for a project yesterday and afterwards we went back to Peony's apartment where I took these photos. OMG, I have not had so much fun in ages! Rowan and Peony are utterly hilarious and have the most incredible sense of style: they just put things together in ways that I would never even think of. The hat actually belongs to Peony (Rowan and a friend gave it to Peony for her birthday) but they borrow each others things all the time.

And Rowan's little H&M** t-shirt? A "just because" gift from Peony :) They really make me miss my best friends back in Sydney.

**At least I think it is from H&M- I was laughing so much and oohing and ahhing over all of Peony's beautiful things that I can't actually remember!

  4. Just thought I'd check into what you're up to you, since you have not posted in awhile on Flickr... Wow! Congrats on all the success, and it sounds like you're getting some great reviews from other people... I must confess to a little professional jealousy, as you've rocketed way past me now in terms of your accomplishments, anyway keep it up, and my day of fame will come yet... :-)

  6. That is by far the most awesome adorable hat ever.
It reminds me of something I had when I was 4 but like ten billion times cooler.

Haha - oh I say a big resounding PSH (it's not a mystifying acronym by the way...you actually have to make the sound) to you being a bad example. If I could be a fraction as awesome as you...I've reached the Holy Grail.

  7. oh vanessa these photos are so incredibly beautiful. i much prefer her hat/ears to the LV ones that everyone was wearing last season. that is so lady-like and slightly sultry. absolutely stunning photos.

speaking of disney land... i wore a full on mini-mouse costume on my first day of kindergarten when i was 5.

oh, and if you swap your layout to wide you can make it so your photos will be bigger and it wont cut off bits on the side. xx

  8. Ooooo so glad you guys like these photos!!! I had so much fun taking them :))))) Photography+fashion+gorgeous girls = complete and utter bliss!

@Sarah J-I will be there in about 4 weeks Sarah! YAY!

@Lola- Isn't it divine?! It is from Marie Mercié, a French designer who has a shop in Knightsbridge....not sure if she sells online as well though.... And yes, absolutely perfect for the races: cute, quirky and stylish all at once.

@Photodiarist- Thank you so, so much, PD! I just adore taking portraits so very much and Rowan and Peony are a complete joy to photograph.
Thank goodness for our cameras huh? I don't know about you but I am totally rubbish with a paintbrush or pastels!

James- So cool to hear from you!!! How are you? Ha ha- well, I suspect I will be one of those people who has "overnight success"- you know, the kind of "overnight success" that actually takes 20 years or so! :)) I think that I have just been very fortunate in finding something that I absolutely adore doing. If I had to photograph flowers or landscapes constantly I would have given up by now as they just don't inspire me like photographing people and fashion does. I have always loved both (people and style) so this is just a dream for me. Still have sooooo far to go but I feel I am on the right path: for the first time in my life :)

@The Fashion Cloud- have you seen the insanely beautiful hats and hairpieces from Masion Michel? I love the "kitty" headband with the bow&veil and also the "claudia" headscarf....I could so see myself wearing one of these while sunning myself on the Côte d'Azur this summer! Ha ha- dream on Vanessa :))

@Ms Kohco: Isn't it just adorable?! I think it is one of those pieces that you just want to have on display all the time although I can imagine that if you kept it on a shelf in the lounge room anybody visiting would want to try it on!It is too cute not to.

@the style crusader- Hey Jen, that is so funny re the mini-mouse costume! Brilliant. I wonder if your mum let you wear it just so you wouldn't cry too much when she had to leave you? One of friend's has a daughter who insisted on wearing a tiger costume constantly! Interestingly she is now still obsessed with wildlife and even wrote a letter to Sir David Attenborough last year (to which he replied!).

Re blog- okay, so I changed the coding to make things a bit wider. Does it still work for most people's computer screens? Let me know if it is too wide now.

  18. Yay! So glad everyone embraced the mouse ears! I think there is a small girl (or, um, little boy?!) hidden inside all of us- gosh, that sounds slightly odd but you know what I mean!

@Pretty Mommy- oh gosh, I forgot to link up to the interview you did with me! Never mind, I will do it tomorrow :))

@Frances- thank you lovely Frances :)) And I am glad the blog format still works on most people's computers- I detest playing with coding (I am worried that I will change something and the whole blog will disappear). p.s. Scary is that young female photographer (think she is 16 years old) who has just done an editorial for Harper's or Elle- can't remember which!). Wow! now that is something special :)

@M, @Clare, @Rosalyn-I think we all might be closet Mickey/Minnie fans!

    @anon and @visual by Eveline L.- Yay! I got the H&M part right :)))))

@Laura - thanks so much Laura- I was told by my English teacher at school (many, many years ago!) that I write very colloquially.....I guess that now I don't have to write like a lawyer anymore, I have reverted back to writing conversationally.

@lauren baluyo- oooo thank you so much lauren! That is so lovely of you to say so :)
